{"id":283,"date":"2019-05-20T00:00:10","date_gmt":"2019-05-20T00:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sluggerpost.com\/?p=283"},"modified":"2024-03-16T13:43:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-16T13:43:22","slug":"bushmeat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sluggerpost.com\/?p=283","title":{"rendered":"Bushmeat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is bushmeat?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The term \u201cbushmeat\u201d refers to raw or minimally processed meat that comes from wild animals in certain regions of the world, including Africa and other areas, and may pose a communicable disease risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bushmeat comes from a variety of wild animals, including bats, nonhuman primates (monkeys and apes), cane rats (grasscutters), and duiker (antelope).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bushmeat is often smoked, dried, or salted (these procedures are not sufficient to render the meat noninfectious).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bushmeat is illegal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It is illegal to bring bushmeat into the United States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bushmeat, in any amount, found at US ports of entry will be destroyed along with any personal items that may have come in contact with the bushmeat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a $250,000 fine for bringing bushmeat into the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bushmeat and Ebola<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Monkeys and bats are common sources of bushmeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"safari-reader:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/ebola\/about.html\">Ebola<\/a>&nbsp;is a rare and deadly disease that is spread through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of a person who is sick with or died from Ebola.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generally, Ebola is not spread by food. However, in Africa human infections have been associated with hunting, butchering, and processing meat from infected animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To date, there have been no reports of human sickness in the United States from preparing or consuming bushmeat illegally brought into the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health concerns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Bushmeat could be infected with germs that can cause sickness in people, including the Ebola virus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ebola infections in people have been associated with handling and eating infected animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Do not bring bushmeat into the United States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not eat or handle bushmeat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell friends and family to avoid bushmeat, because it is illegal to bring it into the United States, and it can make people sick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you must handle bushmeat, wear disposable gloves. When you remove your gloves, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you choose to eat bushmeat, make sure it is cooked thoroughly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is bushmeat?
